About this event

To welcome all book lovers of different reading preferences, our monthly book pick is simply a conversation starter - whether you’ve read it or not, our discussion topics go far beyond the book, touching on a variety of themes and interests. Our gathering is NOT about analysing the book like a seminar, but more about connecting, sharing ideas, and enjoying a relaxed, social evening with fellow book lovers over drinks.

📚 Book Recommendation of the Month:

Hotel du Lac by Anita Brookner

Synopsis (without spoilers):

At just 184 pages, Hotel du Lac follows Edith Hope, a reserved London-based writer seeking solitude at a quiet Swiss hotel. As she observes the lives of its eccentric guests, she reflects on love, societal expectations, and her own choices. A novel of quiet elegance, it explores themes of independence, duty, and self-discovery with wit and psychological depth.

Our book club sessions are a great way to engage in lively and friendly discussions, share insights, and meet fellow book lovers, sometimes the author as well. The Insight Society is a UK-based research organisation, and this informal book club is just a part of our comprehensive efforts to foster informed public discourse and informal intellectual engagement.

Our meeting will be held in a private room exclusively reserved for us at a posh wine bar in South Kensington, just steps away from Gloucester Road station. We keep each gathering small - fewer than 10 participants - to ensure everyone has a chance to join and enjoy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to finish the book to attend?

Not at all. Our book pick is based on the most popular reads from The New York Times. If you plan to read or have read it, that’s great; if you haven’t touched it, you’re still more than welcome to join.

How can I contribute to the discussion if I haven’t read the book?

The book is simply a conversation starter - our discussions often branch out into related themes, personal experiences and broader topics of interest. Our gathering is more about socialising and engaging in decent conversations with book lovers, rather than a formal seminar.

Can I also discuss my own fav book or the book I recently read?

Absolutely! Our gatherings are all about open conversations, and we’d love to hear your thoughts on any book that’s been captivating to you.

Is this group open to everyone?

Yes - this is a friendly and inclusive group, welcoming everyone regardless of gender, sexuality, or background. The event is designed to make it easy to meet and connect with fellow book lovers in our community.

What if I'm shy about speaking in front of the group?

No pressure! You're welcome to participate in the way that feels most comfortable for you. Whether you share your views or just listen, your presence is valued.
