Community Palliative Care and COVID-19 by Tania Blackmore and Georgina Parker is an essential guide to caring for the community palliative care patient in relation to COVID-19, when the patient’s preferred place of care is at home or the hospice. It will guide you through appropriate care procedures and protocols in managing end-of-life patients who show symptoms of COVID- 19.
Supported by applicable case studies from a range of community care settings, this guide will be relevant to anyone affected by the challenges of COVID-19 when managing end-of-life patients or caring for older people, including paramedics, nurses and palliative care providers.
Tania Blackmore is a Senior Lecturer in Palliative and End of Life Care in the Faculty of Education, Health and Human Sciences at the University of Greenwich . Tania completed her nurse training at Charing Cross School of Nursing , London in 1988 working in trauma and orthopaedics before specialising in HIV & AIDS . In the late eighties and early nineties, she worked at The World’s End Health Centre , The Thomas McCauley Unit at St Stephens and Westminster Hospital also at Kobler Centre Chelsea in the speciality of AIDS as well as working on drugs trials studying combinations to fight HIV. After many years working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative care in the community , hospice and in the acute sector she completed a MSc in Advance Practice in Palliative Care at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2014 gaining a distinction for her research project which explored acute clinicians views on caring for palliative patients. She is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Tania is responsible for delivering all aspects of palliative and end of life education across the paramedic programme such as symptom control , breaking bad news , ethical and legal aspects of death , bereavement , loss , grief and professional resilience . Tania is currently studying for her PhD at the International Observatory of End of Life Care , at Lancaster University .
Georgina Parker is Lead Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Heart of Kent Hospice in Maidstone. Having completed her undergraduate training at St George’s Hospital, Georgina worked as a junior doctor in Ashford and Medway. She passed her membership exams for the Royal College of Physicians in 2003 whilst working as a staff grade doctor in Palliative Care and then embarked on her specialist training in Palliative Medicine. Having competed this training whilst working as part of specialist palliative care inpatient, community and hospital teams; Georgina has worked as a consultant in Kent for the last 12 years. Georgina is a facilitator for Advanced Communication Skills training courses and also for Project ECHO and enjoys supporting learning and development in fellow healthcare professionals. Georgina has a special interest in communication skills and the importance of open, honest, compassionate communication in end-of-life care. She is also committed to research in palliative care and has been involved in several research projects and is working to establish Heart of Kent Hospice as a research-active hospice.
