Event description

Description

Please join us at the Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare in celebrating the launch of Deinstitutionalisation and After: Post-war Psychiatry in the Western World, edited by Despo Kritsotaki, Vicky Long and Matthew Smith. Deinstitutionalisation and After, published by Palgrave Macmillan in the series Mental Health in Historical Perspective, is the first edited volume to chart the end of the asylum era in psychiatric care. It examines the many meanings, experiences and impacts of deinstitutionalisation in Europe, North America and Australia, highlighting the challenges inherent in treating the mentally ill outside of the asylum, and seeking to inform ongoing debates about how to help the most vulnerable members of society.
