How did we become so divided and what do we do about it?

In his book Jon Yates talks about the ways in which our societies have become disconnected, so that most of us spend less and less time with people who are different - as defined by age, race, or class, earning power or education.

He argues that the pandemic has created an unprecedented opportunity for us to come together with a set of shared practises and institutions - that can strengthen the glue that bonds our societies, in all their diversity.

The themes in Jon’s book link to our strategic priority for improving wellbeing in the UK by building happier, healthier neighbourhoods, with increased social connectedness and community participation, and reduced social exclusion, prejudice and loneliness.

About the author

Jon Yates is Executive Director of the Youth Endowment Fund, a £200m charitable fund focused on integrating young people into society. After graduating from the University of Oxford, he started his career as a community worker in the London Borough of Newham, before joining McKinsey and Company, where he advised charities, companies and government on strategy and organisational development. He has co-founded a series of charities and initiatives including The Challenge and More in Common aimed at improving life chances and understanding. These programmes now reach 1 in 6 Britons in their lifetime.
