Book Launch Event ‘Home-Land: Romanian Roma, Domestic Spaces and the State’

Dr Rachel Humphris

In her new book ‘Home-Land’, Dr Rachel Humphris, from the Institute for Research Into Superdiversity (IRiS), seeks to open up new questions for academic and political debates about citizenship, migration and belonging. Her book is based on 14 months ethnographic fieldwork living with Europe’s most marginalised migrants – those identified as Roma. Rachel traced how these migrants were governed from the perspective of living within their homes and also accompanied the frontline workers they met as they tried to make a home in the UK.

Join Rachel and a panel of University of Birmingham experts on migration, ethnography, social work and immigration enforcement to explore more about the realities of urban marginality, race and migration and the effects of the welfare-immigration nexus. The University of Birmingham panellists comprise of:

Nando Sigona, Reader in International Migration and Forced Displacement
Harry Ferguson, Professor of Social Work
Melanie Griffiths, Lecturer in Human Geography

Read Dr Rachel Humphris’ fascinating blog post ‘Brexit and domestic borders: lessons from the unspoken rules of citizenship’.
