“There is something special about studio.”

Studio Properties: A Field Guide to Design Education is the first book in a new series on Design Education published by Bloomsbury Visual Arts and is available to buy and download for free here.

The book has been designed to give design educators and researchers the concepts, scholarship, and language to discuss studio pedagogy with greater confidence. These discussions matter more as the subject faces ongoing pressures to fit further into the structures of traditional academia. But it also reveals the potential and richness of studio as cultures, places, and peoples – when these are allowed to fully emerge and flourish.

The authors will present the book, discussing how it was created, the ideas behind it, and how they hope it will be utilised by design educators and researchers. We will also discuss what the work reveals about what we still do not know about studio as a mode of education.

Ultimately, we hope the book will offer an important base from which further discussions around studio can emerge. And we look forward to starting that discussion with the DRS Education Community.

Endorsements for the book:—‘This book offers a compelling articulation of ‘studio’ as creative education. This isn’t about a studio or the studio – instead, it layers multiple, non-linear meanings into the simple/not simple term ‘studio’. This beautifully designed book reveals the educative potential, complexity, ambiguity, joy and allure of ‘studio’.’ Professor Susan Orr, De Montfort University, UK

‘An unparalleled guide for educators and students navigating the complexities of design education. It masterfully synthesizes scholarly insights with the lived realities of studio culture. Studio Properties is the ultimate companion for pedagogues who live and breathe design.’ Professor Ashraf M. Salama, University of Northumbria, UK
