Event description

Description

A dramatic book launch of Blue Ormer Publishing's new title 'Zoffany's Daughter', including a play by Guernsey History in Action. 7pm on Tuesday 7 November.

In 1825, the people of St Peter Port were gripped by a child custody case involving Cecilia Horne, daughter of the famous artist Zoffany. Cecilia had fled to Guernsey with two of her young daughters to escape her estranged husband. But soon they were discovered. The Reverend Horne demanded his younger child, Laura, be returned to him, citing his absolute rights as a father. Cecilia pleaded the natural rights of a mother. The Royal Court was called on to adjudicate. But in the meantime, Laura was nowhere to be found....

Australian author Stephen Foster has written a fascinating account of this forgotten episode in Guernsey history, blending fact and fiction to create a compelling story. As well as a talk from the author and a book signing, Guernsey History in Action will perform a short play, re-enacting some of the book's courtroom scenes.
