About this event

Arts • Fine Art

Join us for a rare opportunity to meet Helen Oxenbury in person! Bring along your favourite books or purchase her brand-new release Oh Dear, Look What I Got! – a joyful reunion with Bear Hunt author Michael Rosen – and have them signed by the illustrator herself.

Spaces are limited and tickets are timed to help reduce queues. Each ticket admits a group of up to five, with a maximum of three books signed per group.

This event is part of our morning of free, family-friendly fun to celebrate the opening of our contemporary exhibition Helen Oxenbury: We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Other Adventures.

Helen Oxenbury

Helen Oxenbury is one of the world’s most popular and acclaimed children’s book illustrators, and twice winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal. Born in Ipsich, Oxenbury suffered from asthma as a child which periodically left her bedridden – drawing became a favourite distraction and lifeline.

She enrolled in the theatre arts department at London’s Central School of art, and in 1957 she met fellow student and illustrator John Burningham, who she would later marry. Upon graduating, Oxenbury joined the Colchester Repertory Theatre and travelled to Habima, Israel’s national theatre where she became a set designer.

After the birth of their first child, Burningham encouraged Oxenbury to try illustrating children’s books herself and she didn’t look back. She won numerous awards and illustrated over 30 children’s books throughout her 50-year career.
