Event description

Description

This is the first part of a course over two sessions, designed to introduce the beginner and bookbinding student to the 2,000 year old skills and traditional techniques of binding books by hand. These sessions will acquaint the student with decorative and historical sewing techniques and give them an understanding of machine-made paper, simple folding and cutting techniques and incorporate an understanding of paper grain.

In this first session the student will sew a multi-sectional textblock using a decorative French stitch and cover the book with a paper, laced-on cover. The cover will incorporate a simplified form of a Yapp edge; a binding style introduced during the middle of the 19th Century.

During the second session the student will be introduced to the 2,000 year old Coptic sewing technique, using two needles and will sew sheets between boards. This technique creates a multi-sectional binding which has the property of allowing the textblock to be opened completely flat. This style can be used to create very decorative bindings using handmade papers.

Mark Ramsden is an award winning and internationally recognised binder. He holds a master’s degree in book conservation and for 13 years headed the University Bindery in Aberdeen. In 2015 he took early retirement and established his Studio in the Scottish Borders. Please see his website for more details.

Materials All necessary materials; paper, thread, needles etc. will be provided but if any student has any papers they would like to use please bring them and their suitability can be assessed. There will be a charge of £10 per session for materials, payable to Mark on the day.

Tools The student will bring a craft knife (the snap-off blade type), a propelling pencil and a 12” (30cm) metal ruler. However all the tools needed to produce the bindings will be available at each session.

The cost of each session will be £20 and can be booked separately.

The sessions will run from 10 -12.30pm and 1 -3.00pm with a 30 minute break for lunch. Refreshments throughout the day are included in the price. Please bring a packed lunch. Student numbers will be limited to 10.
