Event description

Description

This is the first of two sessions designed to introduce the beginner and bookbinding student to the 2,000 year old skills and traditional techniques of binding books by hand. This course will acquaint the student with basic sewing techniques and give them an understanding of machine-made paper, simple folding and cutting techniques and incorporate an understanding of paper grain.

The first session will cover non-adhesive techniques, by the production of a notebook followed by the creation of one or more books using decorative Japanese sewing techniques. These ancient Oriental methods of binding sheets are eminently suitable for sewing books created from pages printed on modern day household printers.

The course is led by Mark Ramsden, an award winning and internationally recognised binder. He holds a master’s degree in book conservation and for 13 years headed the University Bindery in Aberdeen. In 2015 he took early retirement and established his Studio in the Scottish Borders. Please see his website for more details: www.bookmanconservation.co.uk

Cost: The cost of each session will be £20 and can be booked separately. The sessions will run from 10 - 12.30 pm and 1 - 3.30pm with a 30 minute break for lunch. Refreshments throughout the day are included in the price. Please bring a packed lunch.

Materials: All the materials will be provided and the cost of these will be £12 for the first session and £20 for the second session, payable directly to Mark on the day.

All necessary materials; paper, thread, adhesive etc. will be provided but if any student has any papers they would like to use please bring them and their suitability can be assessed.

Tools: The student will bring a craft knife (the snap-off blade type), a propelling pencil and a 12” (30cm) metal ruler. Please bring a cutting mat if you have one. However all the tools needed to produce the bindings will be available at each session.

Numbers: Student numbers will be limited to 10.
