Come and learn how to make a book using this ancient and brilliant sewing technique.

Perfect for notebooks and small volumes, Coptic sewing allows books to open flat, ready for your thoughts, observations and images.*

No previous experience required for this mindful activity in calm surroundings.

  • All materials supplied.
  • Refreshments will be supplied, but please bring your own lunch (or eat at one of Innerleithen's brilliant cafes).
  • Suitable for ages 12-120 - under 16s accompanied by an adult

*If you want to bind pages that already have text/images, please contact us beforehand to discuss suitability.

Due to a generous grant, we are able to offer 1 free Community Collaboration place to applicants with Innerleithen or Walkerburn postcodes. To apply, email us with a bit of information about yourself (smails@nts.org.uk) by the 16th of August. Applications will be confirmed 7 days before the course date.

Frequently asked questions

Is the workshop accessible?

The workshop space is upstairs and is not wheelchair accessible. Bookbinding can be done sitting down. Folding and sewing requires some manual dexterity.

Is the printing works dog friendly?

We only allow guide dogs and assistance dogs.
