We are thrilled to welcome editor, writer and founder of BookBlast Ltd, Georgia de Chamberet, as host of The Translation Book Club here at Hatchards.
Meeting on the second Monday of each month, we will be discussing works of fiction in translation from around the world published in the last ten years. With the promise that the titles chosen by Georgia and Hatchards booksellers will be well-written, engaging storytelling, the book club aims to inspire reading for pleasure as well as illuminating cultures beyond our shores.
This evening's discussion focuses: In The Company of Men by Veronique Tadjo
In a series of moving snapshots, Véronique Tadjo illustrates the terrible extent of the Ebola epidemic: the doctor who tirelessly treats patients day after day in a sweltering tent, protected from the virus only by a plastic suit; the student who volunteers to work as a gravedigger while universities are closed, helping the teams overwhelmed by the sheer number of bodies; the grandmother who agrees to take in an orphaned young boy cast out of his village for fear of infection. And watching over them all is the ancient and wise Baobab tree, mourning the dire state of the earth yet providing a sense of hope for the future.
It's going to be an evening of brilliant discussion, especially as author Veronique Tadjo will be with us here at Hatchards - we hope you can join us!
