John Niven visited Bookface two years ago with O Brother, his powerful bestselling memoir about the life and death of his younger brother Gary. This time, he’s back with The Fathers, a sharp, darkly funny novel exploring fatherhood, masculinity, and class.

Born in Irvine, Ayrshire, Niven studied English Literature at the University of Glasgow, graduating with first-class honours. He spent a decade in the music industry before turning to writing full-time. His breakout novel Kill Your Friends (2008) was a savage satire of his A&R days and went on to become a cult bestseller.

His fiction spans genres – from comedies like The Sunshine Cruise Company to thrillers like Cold Hands – but it’s all shot through with his trademark wit and bite. Alongside novels, Niven writes screenplays with his writing partner Nick Ball and has contributed journalism to Q and The Independent.

In The Fathers, Niven returns to fiction with the story of two very different dads – one a successful screenwriter, the other a small-time Glaswegian criminal – thrown together by chance outside a maternity ward. Like all his best work, it’s sharp, unpredictable and impossible to pigeonhole.
