BookMachine Unplugged: Talking Editorial

Inclusion: It’s time to stop talking and start making real changes

Publishing, we have a problem: despite years of well-meaning discussion, our industry is still failing to represent the diversity of society in our staff and the content we produce. So what can we do about this, as individuals? For those of us who don’t run our own publishing houses, it’s easy to feel powerless to make meaningful changes.

In this empowering event, speakers from publishers large and small will give insights into their work to increase representation of BAME, working-class and LGBTQ+ voices. We’ll look at how editors can actively seek out a diverse range of voices to build a list, and we’ll also focus on ways of reaching out to potential staff members who might not automatically feel they ‘belong’ in the industry. Join us for an evening packed with real-life examples and practical tips, and get involved in building a publishing industry that’s fit for the society we live in.
