Event description
DIY Denim repair workshop using Japanese stitching techniques

About this Event

On the first Tuesday of every month I will be running a denim repair workshop using Japanese 'Boro' and 'Sashiko' stitching techniques.

'Boro' is a type of textiles made of fabric which has been patched many times. Boro is a bit like the Japanese equivalent of the British 'make do and mend' mentality. When cloth became tattered and worn out, people would patch up garments using old scraps of cloth.

'Sashiko' literally translates as little stabs, and is a type of quilting where hemp or cotton thread is sewn in a running stitch to quilt together layers of fabric. It's both functional and decorative.

In this session you will learn about the history of Japanese boro and mending. Learn new stitching techniques to repair your garment and spend quality time looking after and giving new life to your clothes.

Please bring an item of clothing you would like to patch and repair - something denim is recommended!

Indigo dyed scrap fabric and sewing thread will be provided.

About Indigo Works

Indigo Works was founded by Liza Mackenzie in 2015. She studied Indigo, known as Aizome, under a Master Craftsman whilst living in Japan for four years. She is a textile designer and researcher with a specialism in Japanese craft textiles and sustainable dyes.

How to get there:

This workshop will be held at Blackhorse Lane Atelier’s flagship store, at Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross. This is a unique setting where jeans are mended and hemmed, they run jeans sewing masterclasses, and you’ll be sat around a table made right by their factory in Walthamstow out of a felled London plane tree. Blackhorse Lane Ateliers are London’s only craft jeans maker, who create tailored jeans from raw selvedge and organic denim that are made to last. They believe in building connections with your garments, so learning how to mend clothing yourself in their space, should embed your garment with even more of a story. Arrive early to purchase items from the store - there’ll be fabric, haberdashery and threads for sale, as well as their jeans.
