BOTA Summer Skills

Friday 16th June 2017

Overview

BOTA members are invited to attend this one-day skills event that will provide high-quality content for senior (ST3+) and junior (F1-CT2/3) trainees. Choose from three content streams, each designed to provide trainees with practical skills useful for career progression and helping to achieve your CCT.

Sessions will be delivered by experienced faculty at the Royal Society of Medicine in central London. Each stream will include refreshments and lunch.

Stream A (ST3-8 only)

Leadership for T&O

Evidence of effective leadership is a prerequisite for achieving CCT. This one-day event addresses a selection of relevant leadership skills and opportunities specific to T&O. Delivered by an experienced faculty, this BOA-affiliated event is aimed at specialist registrars.

- ST3-8 only

- Mandatory pre-course reading and activities will be provided

- 0930 – 1700

- Limited to 32 delegates only (divided into groups)

- GBP 30

Stream B (F1-CT2/3 only)

Junior plastering skills / How to get a T&O NTN / Portfolio review

Evidence of plastering competency is a requirement for Core Surgical Training applications. Sue Miles (BOA lead for the British Casting Certificate, Stanmore) and colleagues will provide junior delegates with a hands-on introduction to upper and lower limb casting techniques. This unique and excellent value opportunity is not to be missed. Delegates will also be coached on how to succeed at national selection for T&O higher specialty training. Bring along your portfolio for a review by registrars familiar with the application processes.

- F1-CT2/3 only

- 0930 – 1600

- Limited to 24 delegates only

- GBP 30

Stream C (ST3-8 only)

Advanced plastering skills / Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training / FRCS drawing skills

Evidence of plastering competency is a new requirement for achieving your CCT and this one-day skills stream for specialist registrars will include hands-on advanced casting tuition by Sue Miles (BOA lead for the British Casting Certificate, Stanmore) and colleagues. Evidence of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training is also a CCT-requirement and delegates will receive comprehensive GCP teaching covering the ethical, scientific and practical standards to which all clinical research should be completed. Finally, Mr Lyndon Mason, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, will present a selection of memorable drawing techniques (covering anatomy and basic science) that will prepare delegates for success in their FRCS examination.

- ST3-8 only

- 0930 – 1700

- Limited to 18 delegates only

- GBP 30

There is currently a waiting list for stream C as it has proved very popular. There are currently still spaces in stream A. If there are cancellations in stream C, some delegates from stream A can be moved to stream C on a first-come first-served basis. Note, applying for stream A doesn't guarantee you'll be moved to stream C and we would discourage delegates for applying to the Leadership session on the assumption you might be moved. The British Orthopaedic Trainee Association reserve the right to keep delegates in the groups they've applied to on the day and not move anybody.

Please note a limited number of places will be available for medical students who wish to volunteer to assist with the running of the summer school on the day.
