Start your botanical colour journey using inks extracted from plants. You’ll see the full range of possible hues and shades through mixing and modifiers. All the inks will have been made in the studio and your tutor will talk through the step by step processes behind how they were created and perserved. You’ll make a beautiful colour wheel as a reminder of the techniques shown.

You'll meet other likeminded artists and makers and we'll talk about enviromentally sustainable art making in the studio. Making our own ink can help us make direct connections between our practices and the immediate surroundings and help us understand how colour responds to light and archival questions

This workshop is led by Alison who is a fine artist who makes drawing, watercolour paintings and ink. She is one of the co-directors of SILT and runs Wessex Wildness Watercolours and the Experimental Drawing Club, both in Trowbridge.

SILT is a studio and community hub for ecologically aware image and colour research set up by Anna Chrystal Stephens and Alison Ballance. We run in-person workshops for use of our facilities, public events, talks and exhibitions.

All elements of our programme relate to environmentally focused art practice. Processes and materials used and made in the space range from analogue photographic images developed with non-toxic plant based substance, paints, inks and dyes made using ecologically safe ingredients, textiles made with foraged or repurposed materials.
