Event Details

Box (dir. Banmei Takahashi, Japan, 2010, 120 minutes) is based on the true story of former professional boxer Iwao Hakamada, who has spent over 45 years incarcerated on death row.  Iwao was arrested in 1966 for murder.  He has always insisted on his innocence and many others also believe he has been falsely accused.  Click here for more details on his case.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with

- Chiara Sangiorgio from the death penalty team at Amnesty's International Secretariat

- Jim Welsh, an expert on mental health in Japanese prisons, Amnesty International

- Dr Isolde Standish, a leading authority on Japanese cinema and Reader in Film and Media Studies, Department of Japan and Korea at SOAS.

- Mark Pritchard MP, Vice Chair of the Death Penalty and the British-Japanese All-Party Parliamentary Groups.

Free event. Booking in advance recommended.

Bar and refreshments available from 6pm.
