About this event

This jewellery box will be covered in embossed metal tape, which will then be embellished with an inked artwork. It will be finished off with metal legs and clasp and lined with fabric. This is a workshop for absolute beginners. No knowledge of craft is needed.

You will be given traceable designs and all pieces and tools will be included in your craft box, which I will send a few days before the workshop. The only extra item you will need is a craft knife or sharp little kitchen knife (which cannot be included).

On this two and a half hour workshop you will follow me on live zoom as I show you the various processes, while having a close up look at my hands, as well as one camera on my face. Classes will be kept small so I can see everyone at work and I will be able to help with answering of questions.

Please wear an apron or something old as the inks and paints won’t come off your clothes. Before the workshop starts, please have your ink work area covered in plastic/newspaper or work on a piece of cardboard. I have sent ink remover for your hands and general clean-up. The workshop is for teens and adults. If your teen is competent with cutting, gluing and sticking, they will be able to manage this workshop.

Hi, I'm Melanie Berman. For the past 20 years I have worked with a variety of craft materials, both in my teachings and in my own work. While becoming captivated with pewter on an embossing workshop a few years ago, it has become my main medium for creative self expression.

In my home country of South Africa, pewter is used extensively in art and embellishment. In my work I use mainly pewter and copper sheet, combining them with different waxes and colourful inks. As well as the metal, I use other forms of mixed media, including textiles, wirework, coloured foils and other decoration. I create one-off pieces as well as using the metal for notebooks, journals, mirror frames and boxes.

I draw my inspiration from nature as well as sculptural pieces and architecture. I am constantly looking for new creative ideas in the many photographs that I take on my travels.
