Description

Tour of Undercliffe Cemetery

Saturday 6th April at 11am

Bradford’s Victorian photographers, artists and entertainers.

Before the days when the general public had cameras people would visit their local photographic studio to have their portraits taken. Find out more about the studios, the photographers and the portraits they took. Some of Bradford’s best known photographers are at Undercliffe, they not only took photos but got involved in film making and introduced X-Rays to local doctors for the very first time.

Artists such as John Sowden played an important part in documenting some of Bradford most well known people, they were called the Bradford Worthies and John Sowden painted their portraits and recorded details of their life and work.

On Christmas day Walter Calver would entertain the children at the Bradford Workhouse with his puppet theatre. Find out about Chorus Tommy, someone who was press ganged, lost an eye and a leg, and had to make a living from busking.

And lots more on Bradford’s photographers, artists and entertainers.

Meet at the Lodge, Undercliffe Lane, Bradford at 11am
