Seven hours face to face/online course for Social Workers or Probation Practitioners.
Participants will delve into the definition, causes, and common types of brain injury, exploring how it affects cognitive, emotional, and behavioural functioning. The course will explore the intricate relationship between brain injury and criminal behaviour, exploring the role and detrimental impact of victim blaming.
Practical strategies for supporting individuals with brain injury will be covered, including effective communication techniques and methods for addressing challenging behaviours. Practitioners will learn to identify signs of brain injury and utilise screening tools to tailor support plans accordingly.
Additionally, the course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to support their relationships with those they work with, helping clients to collaborate with rehabilitation professionals, access support services, and promote engagement in rehabilitative interventions, ultimately enhancing the practitioners ability to effectively support those who have offended with brain injury.
Learning Outcomes - Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define brain injury and identify common causes and types.
- Understand the impact of brain injury on behaviour and cognition.
- Recognise the relationship between brain injury and offending behaviour.
- Analyse the role of victim blaming in offender behaviour.
- Apply effective communication strategies to support individuals with brain injury.

This is an online session, being delivered on Friday 12th December 2025 lasting seven hours from 9.00am – 4.00pm, with breaks. We recommend that you join 5-10 minutes prior to the start to ensure your technology is working correctly as we will be unable to delay the start due to the number of delegates we anticipate attending.

Facilitator:
This course is run by Sarah Turner, MSc, PG Dip, BA (Hons), FDA, Founder of Phoenix Training & Consultancy Ltd. Sarah has 25 years’ experience in health and social care which has seen her work across sectors from primary to tertiary care with an expertise in mental health. Sarah has a proven track record of identifying service gaps and implementing successful and measurable results. These results facilitate positive change, in the form of grassroot initiatives to policy and legislative shifts including but not limited to domestic abuse protection orders.
Sarah has a unique talent which enables her to amplify the voices of individuals and communities in the house of commons and academic arenas. Educated to doctorate level, Sarah is a qualified Youth Worker, Learning & Development lead, Psychologist and Social Worker.
Sarah is a competent and confident educator with the ability to create and deliver training, she is a subject matter expert for several training companies creating and reviewing their content and runs a successful training organisation. Read more.
Refunds, Terms & Conditions:
1) Eventbrite fees are not refundable.
2) Cancellations with over a month's notice will see you being able to claim a full refund minus the Eventbrite fees mentioned in point 1. There will be the option for you to move your booking date free of charge to another available training date on the calendar if there is space available to do so.
3) No refunds will be given for cancellation at under a month's notice. It will be possible to move your booking free of charge to another available date if there are available spaces to do so.
4) If you do not attend the training, no refund will be given but it may be possible to transfer your booking in exceptional circumstances subject to discussion and availability to do so.
5) Late arrivals will not be admitted entry past 09.30 on the day of training. Moving your date to another available slot in this situation if you have missed the start time will be subject to discussion after the training event has taken place.
6) If the organiser has to cancel the training due to sickness or other unavoidable events, a full refund (including the Eventbrite fees mentioned in point 1) will be given, or an offer will be made for you to transfer your place to another date, which will be added to the training schedule with at least 2-3 months notice.
7) There is a minimum attendance of five per course, should the minimum attendance threshold not be met the organiser reserves the right to offer a place on a different date or a full refund.
