Event description

Description

The ‘social care crisis’ often makes headlines in the UK and with a reduction in social care spending, families and friends of those requiring care are often the first port of call. According to recent figures published by Carers UK almost 5 million workers are now juggling their paid job with caring and more than 600 people quit work every day to look after older and disabled relatives. This event will explore the impact of caring for dependent adults on work and careers. Discussions of what organisations and HR practitioners can do in response will follow, along with some key recommendations for practice, and the benefits of supporting our working carers.

Guest speakers

Sue Grogan is a business consultant at Joined-Up Working. She has an NHS and Public Sector background and is passionate about supporting people through life’s challenges with the right information, advice and guidance. She provides a range of online, in house and individual services for businesses and individuals with a focus on people of working age who are struggling with working and caring. The majority of these are the “sandwich generation” of women aged 45 – 65 who may have adult children, grandchildren, dependant partners and elderly relatives and who need or want to continue to work. Her published handbook “Dementia: A Practical Handbook for Working People Caring for a Loved One” supplements her services. Her third handbook is in development with a working title of “Illness, Health & Wellbeing in the Workplace”.

Dr. Louise Oldridge is a Lecturer and Researcher in Human Resource Management at Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University. Louise’s current research focuses on the experiences of mid-life women (aged 45 – 65) who have been providing informal/unpaid care for an adult dependant whilst also working in paid employment. With a generalist HR background in industry prior to joining higher education, Louise is keen to disseminate her findings and use them to work towards greater recognition and support of carers with organisations, practitioners and policy makers, for whom her research has a number of implications.

Founder of I’m your Coach, Jeanette Miller will share her experience of how becoming a carer changed her life and career choices. Jeanette is an experienced Coach, Change Management Specialist and Consultant, working with leaders, senior managers and teams to develop their self-awareness, growing collectively and independently. Her pragmatic, empathetic and challenging style enables Jeanette to quickly build rapport and credibility with clients. Jeanette holds a BSc (Hons) Degree in Psychology, is a Member of the International Coach Federation (ICF) and currently working towards a Post Graduate Certificate in Business and Personal Coaching with the University of Chester.

Please note - the event will include the CIPD Leicestershire Branch Annual Meeting from 18:30 to 18:45, with our guest speakers starting their presentation once the Annual Meeting has concluded.
