Description

GET MORE OUT OF YOUR SUMMER

Looking for something worthwhile to get stuck into? Something that fits around existing work, education, or training commitments?

Be part of a project that's helping people have real conversations about migration and hate crime. These might be hot topics, but people haven't always felt they can discuss them openly. This means there are few opportunities for us to listen to and learn from one another.

We're looking for volunteers who will work with us on this project – people who have an interest in other people and in getting beyond the often superficial, ‘PC’ responses that are current in popular discourse.

To support our volunteers we will be providing you with sessions that will help you to understand :

  • how people use social media to perpetuate hate and what you can do about it?
  • how unconscious bias maintains the status quo and can stop people from recognising discrimination?
  • the best way to research and uncover issues that are going on in your local area?

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

We’ll kick things off with a session from Migrant Voice exploring the role of the media in creating and maintaining perceptions about migrants and minority groups. This is a chance to break out of our own echo chambers and see what we're up against when it comes to fighting prejudice and discrimination.

We’ll then spend some time learning about unconscious bias, in particular looking at how unconscious bias can prevent people from recognising discriminatory thoughts and behaviours. You’ll leave with a much better idea of what community cohesion means (spoiler: it's not just about riots and hate crime. We show people they’re not part of ‘our’ group through hundreds of everyday, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it actions).

Finally, we’ll look at some of the research skills you need to have effective conversations with members of your local community.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Everyone – it doesn’t matter how old you are, what your background is, or what experience you have around social media, unconscious bias, or research. You may find it easier to participate, though, if you are from Birmingham.

THAT’S WEIRD: HOW COME?

As we said, we’re hoping that everyone who attends will take participate in our new project, called Pushing the Boundaries. As part of the project, we’re going around Birmingham having real conversations with people about migration, hate crime, and integration.

As part of the Pushing the Boundaries, we’re looking for volunteers who can help us find out what local people – friends, family, colleagues – think are the important issues we should be discussing. As a volunteer you will:

  • receive training in different skills (that’s the summer school)
  • be provided with expenses to help you participate
  • take part in a city-wide conversation about cohesion

HOW MUCH TIME WILL IT TAKE UP?

The summer school will take place over two mornings:

  • 16 Aug, 10am -12.30pm
  • 24 Aug, 10 am-12.30pm

We’ll give you lunch and reimburse your travel.

In terms of volunteering afterwards, we’ll discuss with you how much time you can spare based on your interest and other commitments.
