Description

This Finance Learn-In day for activists on Saturday March 7th will upskill participants, and help us develop new and effective ways of engaging with the finance sector, encouraging it to disinvest from fossil fuels in favour of renewables.

Mark Carney, outgoing Governor of the Bank of England, is calling for the City's financial sector to wake up and smell the smoke, to see the rising sea levels that accompany the man-made climate and ecological crisis we are in. He's calling on banks and investment houses to urgently disinvest from the carbon economy or else risk the prospect of stranded assets, leaving trillions of dollars uselessly invested in fossil fuels. What's being done already? What are the levers that control this runaway, unaccountable sector? We'll find out and look beyond the bottom line, as we educate ourselves.

Speakers ranging from economists, hedge fund managers, activists and renewable energy experts will help improve our generally low level of understanding of how the City works, and show how it can be brought into dialogue with those of us who care about the planet.

This event is organised by Quakers from Bristol and Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists who have a track record of devising original, creative and effective actions, tackling BlackRock's London HQ in November 2019 and Hargreaves Lansdown, the Bristol-based investors, in January 2020. Who's next? Come and help shape our own learning, thus enabling us to develop more nuanced and persuasive interventions.
