BRAZILIAN JAZZ NIGHTS PRESENTS: Roman Gomez & Andria Antoniou

The Roman Gomez & Andria Antoniou duet is a fresh collaboration between the
Argentinian multi-instrumentalist and composer, Roman Gomez, and the Cypriot jazz
vocalist, Andria Antoniou.
After their first productive collaboration in Athens where they have recorded some original
music, Roman & Andria appear for the first time together in London featuring the new
songs composed by Roman Gomez and their own arrangements of a selection of songs
from different parts of Latin America.
Join us on a journey through Latin America where the passion of the Argentine tango will
come to meet the romance of the Mexican bolero and the vibrancy of the samba.

Roman Gomez

is a renowned piano, bandoneon and guitar soloist, as well as composer and arranger. He was born and raised in Argentina, Buenos Aires, in a tango family; his dad is the tango singer of the orquestra ‘Jose Colangelo’, his uncle a famous tango dancer and the creator of the tango school ‘Copello’ and his brother is a drummer. Apart from immersing himself into the world of tango from a very young age, Roman had classical piano training at the ‘Rene Deppe’ Conservatory and carried on his studies in music composition at the Juan José Castro Conservatory in Buenos Aires. Roman is also a graduate of jazz piano studies and big band at the Ward College in Buenos Aires and electronic music technology in Rimni, Italy, under the tutelage of Diego Bosco. He is self-taught on bandoneon and guitar.

Roman Gomez started off his professional career in Argentina where he worked together with singers and producers while gaining experience in recording studios. He then moved to Rome where he taught music and collaborated with important artists including the jazz composer Daniele Sepe, the singers Lucio Dalla, Edοardo de Angelis, Lisa, Tony Esposito, as well as the prestigious Accademia di Santa Cecilia. For the last ten years he is based in Athens, Greece, where he managed to become one of the most important musicians in the Tango and Latin music scene.

Roman’s music embraces elements from Argentinian music and Latin American folklore, while being enhanced by the flavours of Brazilian music and stylistic/improvisational elements of jazz. Through his improvisations and compositions he creates in a unique way an amalgamation of tango music and modern classical music (influenced by Claude Debussy, Georges Gershwin και Bela Bartok).

Apart from his career as a soloist, composer, and arranger, Roman teaches in Athens and Rome and gives regular masterclasses on tango music in Italy, Belgium, and Germany.

Andria Antoniou is a London-based Finish-Cypriot singer, vocal coach, piano and Latin dance teacher. Born in a musical family in the small island of Cyprus, the vocalist and dancer Andria Antoniou started to develop a strong interest and enthusiasm in the performing arts since she was a little girl. Her sister, a classical singer and music teacher, and her brother, a Flamenco guitarist have influenced her early music education. Her immersion into very different styles of music from an early age and her bilingual upbringing have led her to what she is as a performer; an amalgam of musics from different parts of the world expressed in different languages.

She is a graduate of the Master in Jazz Performance course (Vocal) at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She is also graduate of the Professional Development in Musical Theatre course at the Associated Studios and the Bachelor of Music course at City of London University. Andria is also a qualified dance teacher of Latin American dance. (Imperial Society of Teacher of Dancing).

Andria is an active performer on the London jazz and Latin music scene. Some of the most notable recent collaborations she had was with the famous Greek composer George Hatzinasios, the band ‘Classico Latino’, the Brazilian musician and poet Mario Bakuna, the Argentinian musician/composer Roman Gomez, and the West End Musical Director, Greg Arrowsmith.

Andria has recently travelled to Cuba (Havana) together with ‘Classico Latino’ to record their new album ‘Havana Classics’ together with special guests from Cuba such as the violinist Omar Puente and the singer Alina Torres. The album launch is planned for April 2019.
