Event description

Description

No longer are GPIO technologies the playground of engineers; they are the wrecking ground of creative media practitioners who are using them to grow and enrich their practice. Critically, such technologies also signify a substantial change in how we approach digital culture as lived, experienced, embodied and embedded.

In the first workshop on Monday 4th September, we explore embedded technologies through the methods of wrecking, breaking and hacking. We will introduce participants to basic elements of the arduino kit, exploring its use and potential. The first workshop has two aims:

1) to open up our understandings of familiar and embedded technologies such as biosensors, geolocation functions and smart buildings/cities/technologies in order to re-orientate ourselves to what are now, familiar and everyday technologies.

2) To use the arduino and a range of sensors to generate basic data and data visualisations, exploring their power and affectivity and opening up questions and issues around trust, privacy, identity and the body.

No knowledge of embedded technologies is required for this workshop.

The second workshop on Monday 11th September explores key themes of the self, community and the environment, asking participants to develop and build small research projects in teams to explore questions and issues emerging from the first workshop. You will create sensors, biotech and data visualisations and use the arduino kit to wreck, break or hack you own existing knowledge and reflect on the insights, issues and questions this processes creates.

You will need basic knowledge of the arduino kit/coding/data visualisations for this workshop. While it is not a requirement that you attend the first workshop, it is strongly recommended. You need to book this workshop separately.
