Event description
Based on Truman Capote’s 1958 novella of the same name. Winner of two Academy Awards and nominated for a further three.

About this Event

Based on Truman Capote’s 1958 novella of the same name, Breakfast at Tiffany’s stars a radiant Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, an apparently naïve, somewhat ‘eccentric’ socialite.

With its couture Givenchy styling – Hepburn’s iconic black dress was considered radical and even shocking at the time – the film carries an abundance of effortless cool. Nevertheless, as an introvert required to play an extrovert, Hepburn regarded this as one of her most challenging roles.

In the film, the beautiful and chic Holly lives with her cat in her New York apartment; a seemingly carefree lifestyle funded by a complex network of shallow alliances with various powerful and rich men, including former husbands, incarcerated mobsters, politicians and other adoring potential suitors.

But her approach to life and relationships is shaken up when the aspiring, but financially challenged, writer Paul Varjak (George Peppard) moves in to the block and a significant friendship develops between the pair.

Nevertheless, Holly’s singular focus on securing the money needed to fund her lifestyle repeatedly undermines the potential of their relationship, much to Paul’s frustration…

The film won two Academy Awards: Best Original Score and Best Original Song for “Moon River”. The film was also nominated for three other Academy Awards: Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction.

Hoylake Community Cinema - Bringing cinema back to Hoylake! Independent, classic and specialist films, homemade food, licensed bar, regular Q&As and more... It's about much more than film...

Hoylake Community Cinema is a volunteer-run organisation operated by Hoylake Village Life CIC. We reinvest any profits made into the cinema through various projects, by supporting other organisations and groups, including a three year, £3,000 bursary to Liverpool University Film Studies Unit.

As of October 2018 we now screen films at the Beacon Arts Centre, The Old Town Hall, Hoylake, which is equipped with a high-quality digital projector and sound system, on a large screen. Seats are comfortable and movable; there is disabled access. Films are selected on the broad basis of international awards and nominations and critics’ reviews. Each annual season will feature a range of films from across genres: classic, comedy, drama, animation, sci-fi…

Before and after the films, audiences gather in our ‘PUB’ (Pop up bar) to enjoy homemade food, real ales, wines, teas, coffees and soft drinks.

Our patrons include actors Dai Bradley (Billy Casper in Kes), James Bond actor Daniel Craig; Alex Cox, director of Repo Man and Sid and Nancy among other cult classics,; Karolyn Grimes (Zuzu in It’s a Wonderful Life); Patricia Kelly, widow of the legendary dancer Gene Kelly and Celyn Jones, writer actor and producer (known for Set Fire to the Stars).
