Event description

Description

On 12 March 2020 SP Broadway is hosting a Politics of Planning breakfast roundtable with Cllr Alan Jarrett, Leader of Medway Council in north Kent.

First elected to Medway Council in 1997 representing the ward of Lordswood and Capstone, Cllr Jarrett was Deputy Leader for 15 years before becoming Leader in 2015. At full council elections in May 2019, the Conservatives retained control of the council with a majority of 11.

Medway Council is a unitary authority which covers the ‘Medway Towns’ of Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham, as well as the Hoo Peninsula. Once the home of the Royal Navy dockyards at Chatham, which closed in 1984, large areas of former industrial land have been available for regeneration on both sides of the River Medway, including St Mary’s Island, redeveloped in the early 2000s to provide 1,500 homes, and more recently Rochester Riverside, due to deliver 1,400 homes over the coming decade. The council is in the process of preparing a new Local Plan, which it aims to adopt in 2021.

The council is part of the Thames Gateway Kent Partnership, and in early 2019 Cllr Jarrett announced plans to make Chatham the ‘city centre’ of Medway, taking advantage of significant areas of council-owned land and setting a council-owned housing company to create new homes, shops, business space and nightlife, all with the hope of securing official city status in the not-too-distant future.

“Medway not a place as we would know it: it’s just an administrative area. We’re trying to create more of a shopping and leisure offer, and stop everything closing at 5.30.

“We’ll never be a city until we’ve got a coherent city centre – so let’s build one.”

SP Broadway is delighted to welcome Cllr Jarrett to the Politics of Planning roundtable to hear first-hand his exciting vision for Medway over the next decade, in which planning and development are due to play a central role. We hope you will join us.
