Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Due to overwhelming interest in last month’s event, we have decided to repeat the topic on July 13. It’ll be at a larger venue this time, so all can attend!

We will gather this time at the awesome White Lab, located near metro Iglesia. It is an art gallery, coworking space and bar that has graciously allowed us to host this FREE private event. So, please support them by having at least one drink! Beer and wine will be available for 3 euros.

Like last time, the event will feature several members who have moved from abroad and have broken into the Spanish market.

Each person will tell us each a bit about themselves and their "Spain story", and then we will have a "speed networking" session where you'll have the chance to talk in small groups with each speaker.

The lineup will include:

Shaheen Samavati - Arriving in Spain to study her MBA at IE Business School in 2010, she became a registered freelancer and in 2015 went on to found VeraContent, a multilingual content agency. She is the coordinator of the InterCom events and is also co-founder of SpainGuru, an information portal on work permits and residency issues in Spain.

Christina Samson - She made the move from Los Angeles to Madrid in 2010, originally to take part in the Auxiliar de Conversación program. During the program she also interned with the non-profit DARA International, where she went on to work full time. She currently is a communications specialist for the UN’s SDG Action Campaign. She is co-founder of SpainGuru, president of Madrid for Refugees, as well as the creator of the famed “Madrid auxiliares” Facebook group, probably the most active forum in existence for English speaking people in Madrid.

Stacey Taylor - A St. Louis native, she is a long-term resident of Spain who started out in English teaching and transitioned to work in marketing before landing in her current role, working as Project Assistant for American clinical trials company PPD. She is co-founder of SpainGuru, and has the unique perspective of being “irregular” for five years before successfully obtaining residency through a process known as “arriago social.”

Katherine Gortz - Receiving her Master of Arts in Spanish Language and Literature from Middlebury College, she moved to Spain to teach English in 2006. She worked as a freelance writer before taking on her current role as a digital marketing strategist at Saint Louis University, Madrid Campus.

Pavel Lohr - Moving to Spain in 2011, he attended Universidad Complutense de Madrid and received his Master of Arts in international communication and translation, language interpretation and translation. He went on to acquire his PhD in english linguistics and translation, language interpretation and translation and is currently working as an in-house translator, interpreter and content manager for Spanish energy company Repsol.

Ainhoa Manero Benevente - An immigration lawyer who has worked in both the US and Spain. She has helped countless foreigners gain the right to live and work in Spain.

If you have a story to tell and would like to be added to our speaker lineup at this event or in the future, please email:

We'll touch on:

- The challenges of starting a career in a new country, even if you have experience

- What industries / types of companies most need international profiles (especially as it relates to communication, marketing, writing and translation)

- How to deal with visa issues if you're non EU

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out and read all the super useful information there before the event!

The schedule:

8 p.m. - Arrive, sign in and mingle

8:30 p.m. - Presentations (6 presenters, 5 mins each)

9:00 p.m. - Speed networking (6 stataions, 5 mins per station)

10:00 p.m. - For those who would like, we can have some tapas at a different bar afterwards :)

This event will be live streamed in the InterCom Facebook group, and the full video can be found there after the event. You can ask questions in the comments on the video and they will be posed to the speakers during the event (as time allows).

InterCom Spain aims to bring together people with similar career interests, and who understand the power of being able to expertly communicate in English and Spanish, and other languages, to reach an international audience. Most of our members work in public relations, copywriting, journalism, multimedia production, marketing, translation or other related fields (or aspire to). If you have a way with words - we want to meet you! Our (free) monthly meetups are a chance to talk shop in a casual atmosphere.
