Description

The Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust, Derby & Hucknall Branch presents the 2017 Presidents Evening Lecture

Title: Breaking the Magic 1000 xxx. The German-British Airspeed Race 1939-1947

Guest Speaker: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dietrich Eckardt

From early on striving for airspeed records accompanied international aviation developments. This was done in secrecy during WW II, between the warring parties the Third Reich and Great Britain - to reach the magic target -1000 km/h close to the sonic barrier, but somewhat surprising and inexplicable was the fact that a jump to 1000 mph was also under serious development. All this was being pursued with considerable technical effort and extraordinary wizzadry of the test pilots. Besides the essential replacement of conventional piston engines by the superior, though unproven jet engines, the period is characterised by the introduction of numerous technical firsts on the propulsion and airframe side (turbojet with afterburner, swept wing, etc.). Most astonishingly, several decisive activities happened in the last months of war, documented by original test reports, which showed up only recently- come and find out more
