What is an ‘unhelpful rule’?
At Breaking the Rules we define ‘unhelpful rules’ as beliefs or behaviours that aren't serving you well, often in spite of seeming kind, considered or well-informed. Unhelpful rules are commonly expressed as “shoulds” or “oughts”. Or as absolutes such as “always” or “never”. Unhelpful rules are rigid and restrictive, leaving us feeling guilty, ashamed and anxious, thinking less of ourselves if we don't obey them.
Examples might include: I should always stick to my gym routine; I mustn't eat the dessert; I ought to be able to juggle everything.
Join Natalie Chambers, Counselling Psychologist and marissa-catherine carrarini, Nutritional Therapist, for a day of gentle discovery, bringing unhelpful rules into awareness and initiating meaningful change.
We welcome everyone and anyone into this workshop. You might find it particularly useful if you have a history of disordered eating, have a complex relationship with exercise, perfectionism or low self-esteem. Not sure if it's for you? Do drop us an email - we're happy to discuss it with you.
Frequently asked questions
Breaking the Rules workshops are for anyone over the age of 18, of any gender, who wants to explore where unhelpful rules are making life less fun, more stressful and preventing you from thriving in your relationships, at work, in education and within yourself. Any questions - drop us an email.
There is no obligation to share anything. We will support you to join in the discussion if that is right for you. If it is not appropriate or you just don’t fancy it, then no problem. There will be plenty to be learnt by listening too.
If you would like to bring a notebook and pen, please do. We will also be providing handouts and any other resources needed. There will be a lunchbreak as part of the day, so you might want to bring your lunch. Alternatively there are lots of local cafes to buy food.
Unfortunately not. The building does not have a lift or disabled toilet, and our room is up a short flight of stairs. Please do get in touch if you would like to ask any specific accessibility questions.
