Description

Bvlgari Hotel London’s Breakthrough Women in Film Series has returned for its third season, having launched in November 2019 and then running monthly from January through to March 2020. Bvlgari Hotel London’s private Screening Room will host a series of four preview film screenings championing female filmmakers and female-driven storylines. Guests will have the opportunity to watch a world-class pre-release film, as well as discovering the backstory of each project. Prior to the film, ticket holders can also enjoy canapés, along with Champagne and wines selected by the hotel’s expert sommelier.

As part of the series, Bvlgari Hotel London is proud to be hosting a preview screening of the ground-breaking French film Portrait Of A Lady On Fire. Having received resounding five-star reviews, writer and director Céline Sciamma demonstrates a deeply satisfying new mastery of classical style to go with the contemporary social realism she showed in Girlhood (2014) and Tomboy (2011). The setting is 18th-century Brittany, where an Italian noblewoman has engaged what is officially a ladies’ companion for her beautiful daughter, Héloïse, who has just come out of a convent and is recovering from the loss of her sister. The companion, Marianne, is actually an artist, and the countess wishes her to paint a portrait of Héloïse in secret, to be shown to a wealthy prospective husband in Milan. A story of obsession, Portrait of a Lady on Fire takes inspiration from legendary film director Alfred Hitchcock. Of writer and director Céline Sciamma’s film, the Independent writes: this “gorgeous romantic film concerns itself almost entirely with the unseen powers of the gaze. Through quiet, contemplative scenes – with the camera often left to rest on a close-up – we’re invited to study these women, just as they’re studying each other.”

Highlighting and supporting intelligent, imaginative and inspiring female-focused projects and talent, Bvlgari Hotel London is solidifying its commitment to the arts and its creative patronage of female talent. Secure your place here in exchange for a suggested £20 donation to Bvlgari Hotel London's chosen charity, Save The Children on checkout.
