Event description

Description

Tired of being a ‘Remainiac’ or ‘Br-wrecks-iteer’? ‘Leaver’ or ‘Remainer’? ‘Winner’ or ‘loser’? The next Politics in the Pub is your chance not just to cast your vote, but to explain your decision, to say what you wanted your vote to mean, and to have a direct line to the seat of power about what you want Brexit to be. It’s your chance to stop the name-calling, stop the labelling, stop the arguing, and find a common ground.

As we move closer and closer to Brexit, what our country will look like, how our economy will thrive and what the political landscape will be all seem very far away. In December, you can share your vision, your hopes and your desires for the UK outside the European Union. Don’t miss out.

  • Where: University of Bradford Union of Students, Student Central, Richmond Rd BD7 1DP
  • When: 7pm, 12th December. (An array of food available from 6.30 and during the interval)

You, Politics in the Pub’s audience, are gaining a national reputation: open mindedness, fairness, forthrightness – this is how we attract the foremost speakers, from those sitting in both Houses of Parliament, those sitting in City Hall and those making decisions for our region, to nationally acclaimed journalists, artists and academics. You are why our phone calls get returned, why luminaries are so keen to come to Bradford and speak, and why, recently, CommonGround asked us to host Ten Towns – they want to listen and learn from communities where the decision to leave was decisive, to hear why the EU was so unpopular for many, to know what aspects of social policy we should lose and keep, and to take this knowledge, learning & inspiration back to those who will shape Brexit & our country post-Brexit, enriching all.

In short, they want to hear from you to build a better Britain for all, and they want your voice to be heard.

CommonGround may be unashamedly pro-EU but they are not in Bradford to change your mind; rather, they want to go beyond the commentators, go beyond the experts who appointed themselves to speak for you, and listen to those who voted Leave, understanding how and why the EU is unpopular in Bradford. Furthermore, they want to hear from Remain voters, asking why you wanted to stay in the EU, what problems there were that could be overcome, and what aspects should be kept.

For both Leavers and Remainers, they want Bradfordians to speak up and speak out – qualities for which we are renowned – so that we can find a Common Ground.

Your views will be recorded and taken to the highest offices of government, shared in the capital with those who will shape our exit form the EU and build what Britain will become. We are standing at a cusp in our country’s history; a new horizon is approaching. Let’s stand together, speak together and ensure that our voices - that Bradford’s voice - is heard.

  • Where: University of Bradford Union of Students, Student Central, Richmond Rd BD7 1DP
  • When: 7pm, 12th December. (An array of food available from 6.30 and during the interval)

After an exceptional panel of speakers, which will say why they think Bradford and Britain voted leave, the night will be turned over to you to share why you voted, what you want our country to be like, and find a Common Ground irrespective of how you voted in the referendum. This is not an opportunity to be missed.

Panel

Hugo Dixon is an author, a Financial Times, Guardian & New York Times columnist, an entrepreneur, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief of ‘InFacts’, and Chairman of Common Ground. Hugo believes that Britain is better in Europe; although he wanted Britain to be a part of the EU, he is coming to Bradford to find out why we voted Leave and what Bradford’s Leavers & Remainers want from post-Brexit Britain. Hugo has the contacts in government and byond, and it'll be he who tells your truth to power.

Cllr Ralph Berry is a longstanding and dedicated servant to Bradford. As a Labour & Co-Operative councillor for Wibsey and former portfolio holder on Labour’s council executive, his hand is firmly on Bradford’s pulse. Ralph has worked in probation, social work and within the NHS, and his love & knowledge of politics in indisputable; his interests include Woodcraft Folk, photography and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway – so we’re sure he’ll put us on the right track.

Details of further panelists will be released shortly. As always, our panel will be unbiased, outstandingly qualified and never afraid to ruffle a feather or two.

Common Ground has come to Bradford to find just that – a common ground between Leavers & Remainers, between In & Out, and, together, shape what Britain will become. If you want Bradford’s voice heard, book today.
