A Workshop with Professor Andrew Samuels

When patients and clients introduce a hot topic such as Brexit, the psychotherapist has (at least) two problems. She or he may be in such a state of personal turmoil that the maintenance of their usual professional position feels impossible. The second problem is that we are not really trained in how to work responsibly and relationally when the clinical material is political/cultural/social in nature.

Andrew has been writing about these questions for many years and he will begin the event by briefly explaining a few key ideas. Then he will facilitate a discussion amongst the participants covering (a) their own personal responses and understandings and those of their patients and clients, and (b) how these might be (or have been?) distilled so as to offer something lasting and valuable to the patient or client.

We'll try to avoid sounding like any intelligent journalist on the one hand, and using reductive, pathologising language on the other.

ANDREW SAMUELS is well known for his work at the interface of therapy and politics. He is an Honorary Member of FIP. He was Chair of the UKCP and one of the two founders of Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility. His books include The Political Psyche (1993), Politics on the Couch (2001), Persons, Passions, Psychotherapy, Politics (2014), and A New Therapy for Politics? (2015). His website is famous for its spontaneous rants which are short videos direct to camera:

This event is open to non-FiP members. Registration £25/ £20 (concessions), including light refreshments after the event. Free to FiP members.
