Event description

Description

The platform will be shared by two eminent British European politicians.

Sir Graham and Richard will be considering the enormity of the obstacles the government faces as it begins negotiations? What is the likely reaction behind the scenes within the EU institutions. What are our European partners really thinking? Do they think we are mad? How big are the technical obstacles?

Richard Corbett MEP

Between January 2010 and February 2014, Richard Corbett was an advisor to the first full-time and long-term President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy. In this capacity, and as a frequent writer and commentator on European affairs, he was voted by a panel of retired diplomats, journalists, academics and think-tankers on 14 November 2012 as the fourth most influential Briton on EU policy, ahead of the Prime Minister, the Chancellor and Commission Vice President Baroness Ashton. Richard is now Deputy-Leader of the Labour Party in the European Parliament and is vice-Chair of the European Movement.

Sir Graham Watson

Sir Graham Watson served the UK as a Member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2014. From 1999 to 2001 he chaired the EP's Justice and Home Affairs Committee and from 2002 to 2009 he led its Liberal Democratic Group. He now serves as a Member of the European Economic and Social Committee. Graham Watson formerly served as leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Group in the European Parliament. He was elected president of the European Liberal Democrat party in November 2011. He was knighted in Queen’s Birthday Honours that same year.
