Brexit – What’s next for Northern Ireland and the EU?

Following the triggering of Article 50, it is now critical that Northern Ireland works productively together to secure the best possible negotiating deal. Whilst Article 50 signals the UK’s departure from the EU, it does not articulate the final destination. This will be negotiated over the next two years in a process that is likely to be lengthy and complicated. Given the fragility of the current political situation, and the urgency of the issues unique to Northern Ireland, it is essential that we work quickly and collectively to prioritise what is best for this region.

On 14th June Ulster University will be convening a major forum together with business, industry, academia, and civic society to help take ownership of this process. The core purpose of the event is to focus on the solutions that are uniquely required for Northern Ireland and identify opportunities that present the most promising avenues for progress. With this in mind I am inviting people to attend who are key influencers, thought leaders and passionate about the future of Northern Ireland.

In order to provide thoughtful analysis and context, Ulster University is assembling an outstanding array of expertise with all-island, UK, European and international perspectives across politics, business, journalism and academia. This will enable delegates to constructively consider all angles of Brexit and examine in detail the issues and options pertinent to Northern Ireland.

The symposium will galvanise delegates as an influential group of stakeholders who represent Northern Ireland, ensuring that they are well informed and equipped to shape this vital debate in the years ahead. Northern Ireland needs to move past the point of paralysis and forward with a strong voice. This event will help translate words and ideas into real and meaningful actions and solutions for the benefit of our society.
