Event description

Description

Brian Johnstone’s poetry & jazz group Trio Verso was formed in 2007 and since then has performed at numerous venues around the country including Aye Write, the Ted Hughes Festival, Hidden Door, StAnza, the Traverse Theatre, Skye Reading Room and the Wigtown Book Festival.

Trio Verso – Richard Ingham (saxes, bass clarinet, low whistle, ‘trombophone’), Louise Major (double bass, percussion) & Brian Johnstone (spoken word) – celebrate their tenth anniversary with a special performance in the Scottish Poetry Library. With special guests jazzman Colin Steele (trumpet) and poet Marjorie Lotfi Gill.

Bringing an immediate and original approach to live poetry, the trio frames spoken word in music that is at times rhythmically swinging and at others atmospheric and haunting. Trio Verso performances work through close interaction, the poet exploring the delivery of his verse in relation to the sounds created while the musicians exploit their technique and their instruments’ potential in response to the texts. Their jazz grooves and freely improvised soundscapes refocus the ideas behind the 1950s poetry & jazz movement for a 21st century audience. Expect some special guests to join in the celebration.
