Advancing social equality: the role of higher education, employers, and government

In the current political, economic, and social climate, the matter of social equality has never been more important. This dynamic event is a unique opportunity to join leaders and practitioners from across sectors to explore and identify practice to advance change.

We'll be taking an applied, cross-sector approach through keynote speeches, lively debate, and audience discussion. We'll draw ideas from the latest research and practice, and translate this into action.

Key themes include:

  • Social equality in the current political and economic climate
  • Socio-economic diversity and its relationship with other diversity characteristics
  • The role that school attainment plays in perpetuating inequalities
  • Access and student success in higher education
  • Practical strategies to achieve more inclusive organisational cultures
  • The role of the charity and wider third sector in driving change

Welcome from Lord Tony Hall, Director General of the BBC.

Speakers include:

  • John Amaechi (organisational psychologist and New York Times best-selling author)
  • Professor Janet Beer (Vice-Chancellor, University of Liverpool, and President of Universities UK)
  • Christina Blacklaws (President, Law Society)
  • Professor Tim Blackman (Vice-Chancellor, Middlesex University)
  • Professor Vikki Boliver (University of Durham)
  • Dr Sam Friedman (Associate Professor, LSE and author of The Class Ceiling)
  • Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson (Paralympian, Crossbench Peer, Broadcaster)
  • Tony Hall, Baron Hall of Birkenhead (Director-General, BBC)
  • Gordon Marsden MP (Shadow Minister for Higher Education, Further Education, and Skills)
  • Emran Mian (Director-General, Strategy, Department for Education)
  • Nik Miller (Chief Executive, Bridge Group)

The Bridge Group is a charitable organisation researching and promoting socio-economic diversity and equality. We undertake leading research and policy analysis to improve outcomes in education and employment for individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
