Event description

Description

The School of Education and Social Work warmly invite you to a professional knowledge exchange event bringing together vibrant minds from the University, our professional network and further afield to consider how we 'Bridge the Gap' in each of our fields in our journey towards social justice. In what form does the 'gap' appear to each of us and how do we tackle it?

Considering these questions with us are two remarkable guest speakers who aim to Bridge the Gap in unique ways:

  • Caroline McKenna, Centre Manager at Dundee International Women's Centre (www.diwc.co.uk)
    DIWC is an inspiring local organisation that seeks to engage, educate and empower women from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds: bridging the gap by providing tools to achieve their personal goals. Recognising that there are a multitude of obstacles that may prevent women from integrating into their community, they provide a welcoming space for women of all nationalities where one will 'never feel lonely again';

  • Selina Hales, Director & Founder of Refuweegee (www.refuweegee.co.uk)
    A finalist in the 2016 Scotswoman of the Year Awards for her pioneering work with her charity, Refuweegee, Selina aims to offer a warm welcome to incoming refugees to Glasgow in 'true Glasweigan style': providing them with essentials, a friendly local face and 'letters from the locals'. In challenging times when forces seek to divide us, Refuweegee champions the idea that 'we're all fae somewhere' and cultural gaps need not get in the way.

In addition, we are hosting a number of 5 minute lightening talks from Joanna Mawesley (V&A Dundee) along with staff and students from the School of Education and Social Work who will deliver succinct and thought provoking offerings linked to our theme.
