Description

Can Do Places Workshop for Can Do Forum and Glasgow City Council

Is it any different if you start a business in Banchory or Barrhead? Well there’s logistics, but there’s also culture and attitudes to enterprise.

If you don’t know anyone who started and ran their own business it is so much harder.

Somehow we have divorced business starts from place. Is this why some of our most disadvantaged areas have the lowest start up rates?

Why are communities that are so full of enterprising people looked at only in terms of their social conditions and not their enterprise potential? And what part can collaborative co working Can Do Spaces play in both breathing new life into redundant buildings and building a community’s enterprise confidence?

For some, starting a business can be a route out of poverty. For others starting a business is the only way they can earn a living in a new country.

For veterans and spouses starting a business may be the only way they can earn a living as they make their way from one world - armed forces - to another - civilian life.

We are delighted that Glasgow City Council has not only offered to host this workshop for Can Do but also open it up to interested parties within the Council.

At this event we will hear from:

  • Barry McCulloch, Senior Policy Manager of the FSB on their research on start ups in most disadvantaged areas of Scotland;

  • Iain Scott, Director of Can Do Places on the 6 billion pounds of empty property in Scotland and the booming growth in home based and collaborative business - businesses that could use these empty buildings to grow their business;

  • Sarah Stone, of Co Working Leuchars a collaborative co working space for military spouses and partners.
