Event description

Description

In 2021 Coventry will celebrate being the City of Culture and in 2022 Birmingham will host the Commonwealth Games. In successive years the West Midlands will experience an influx of millions of people attending a range of events and activities, increased investment infrastructure and businesses and the creation of new jobs. To organise and hold such major events takes a lot of planning and resourcing and can be a catalyst to address wider social and cultural issues and leave a legacy of development and improvements beyond the actual events.

Cat Orchard, Head of Policy and Legacy – Commonwealth Games Project Team, Birmingham City Council, and Chenine Bhathena, Creative Director, Coventry City of Culture Trust will present a briefing that will provide an update on the current development plans and also the thinking on the longer term legacy from both events. This will be an opportunity to explore in what ways the influx of investment into the region will impact on the economy, social and cultural issues; how regeneration will involve and impact on communities; improve health and wellbeing, culture and arts, sports development; increase volunteering opportunities, and improve skills and create sustainable jobs, and in what ways will VCSE be involved and benefit their communities.
