BRIGHT is the installation of a rendered sunset backdrop against London’s skyline that will serve as the site for a routine inspired by the televised appearances and electric scenography of North Korea’s all girl group, the Wangjaesan Dancers.
The backdrop, straddles a delicate line between superfluous and sublime, acting as a visual prompt for a performance on Saturday 14th September, taking place at sunset.
BRIGHT finds parallels in Philip K Dick’s Flow My Tears the Policeman Said, where a genetically enhanced pop star protagonist awakes in a world in which he has never existed. The work cites the infamous scene from Singin’ in the Rain that references a digital realm, well before it came into existence.
Other re-appropriations and associations are folded in, among them reference to R&B and Vaslav Nijinski’s The Rite of Spring. The Wangjaesan’s devotion to their country of origin and the earnestness with which it is stated provides a case study in sincerity - and a model through which to study its evolving role in our cultural output. Using sculpture and performance, BRIGHT challenges its audience to navigate the seemingly irreconcilable attitudes of idealism, on the one hand, and the inherent insecurity that underlies it on the other.
