Description

Bright, dusky, bright: On poetry translation

Professor Emily Jeremiah
Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures

This lecture explores the process of literary translation, drawing on the speaker’s extensive experience as a literary translator from Finnish. Citing work by poets Eeva-Liisa Manner, Mirkka Rekola, Jarkko Tontti, and Helvi Juvonen, it explores the questions of biography and positionality and puts forward a view of translation as an embodied, sensual, and intensely personal matter. It also raises questions as to the status of the translated text, the ethics of translation, and translation loss and gain.
