Description

Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble

The String Ensemble are delighted to be performing for the first time at Brighton & Hove Progressive Synagogue. Having featured in the programme for Holocaust Memorial Day several times, on this occasion they will play a selection of beautiful and joyous music including Bach’s Concerto for 3 Violins. Bach wrote a huge amount of music throughout his life and as a result he also recycled some of his music. This piece was originally written as a harpsichord concerto from which he created the Triple Violin Concerto. The piece was lost has been reconstructed; it is a rarely heard work but a wonderful opportunity to showcase our three wonderful violinists. Our soloists are the current leaders of Brighton Youth Orchestra: Rama Suphadet, Freya Stewart and Freya Clarke, who is also leader of the String Ensemble.

The programme will include another very rare work: ‘Pastoral Suite’ by Avril Coleridge Taylor. This work, written around 1930 had never been performed before Andrew Sherwood transcribed it from an original manuscript found in the library of the Royal College of Music. Avril was the daughter of the great British black composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor (of Hiawatha fame). She herself was a formidable musician conducting many of the largest symphony orchestras in London and a composer of large works. She died in Seaford in 1996.

The ensemble will also perform by memory playing the exciting 5 Greek Dances by Nikos Skalkottas. These dances are very tuneful but demanding and very few groups would tackle such a work by memory alone. The Ensemble often include a memorised work their concerts: this first happened spontaneously at a performance in Dieppe when all the lights went off and the ensemble continued playing!

The String Ensemble is made up of players from the Brighton Youth Orchestra which was founded in the late 1940’s. The String Ensemble itself was founded in 1993 by Andrew Sherwood. It has an enviable reputation both locally and nationally and has won several National awards. Several composers including Peter Copley and Howard Goodall has written specifically for them, they have given an hour-long live performance on Classic FM and performed at Inveraray Castle, the Japanese Embassy and the Albert Hall.
