Bringing Poems To Life
Tue, 11 Oct 2016, 19:00 – Tue, 13 Dec 2016, 20:30 PDT
Bringing Poems To Life is an 8 week voice and text workshop delivered by Giles Abbott. Every Thursday evening.
The Sonnet - A verse form created in Italy, and brought to perfection in English by William Shakespeare. So what makes a sonnet a sonnet? Why choose to write one? How can you read one?
The Augustans - Pope & Dryden. Why did English poets write English poems in Latin verse forms? Why does poetry become satirical, witty, at this time?
The Romantics - Wordsworth & Coleridge. Why did Wordsworth & Coleridge want to see the language of ordinary people suitable for poetry? What & why were their revolutions in form?
Victorian narrative verse - Tennyson & Browning. Why did Victorian poets feel they ought to write long narrative poems? And how to approach reading narrative poetry and how do you take the listener through the journey of the poem using only your voice?
In all classes, as well as engaging in critical discussion and analysis of poetry, you will get to work on developing your speaking voice, freeing it, so your voice is better able to carry the poems you love! And bring them to life!
