About this Event

Jonathan Darnborough, composer and pianist and Opera Prelude young artists

Mozart is not just a musical genius but also a supreme dramatist with a deep understanding of what makes his characters tick and an unerring instinct for what works on stage. But how does he go about depicting so perfectly not just the grand passions but the moments of petulance or playfulness in his protagonists? Of course, da Ponte’s libretto lays the foundations but Mozart takes it to new levels of psychological truth. In this talk Jonathan Darnborough explores the ways in which Mozart achieves this - by deft repetitions and rearrangements of the text and the extraordinary subtlety of his musical setting.

Jonathan Darnborough pursues a career as a composer, prize winning concert pianist and international lecturer at Oxford, Stanford and Yale.

He has written orchestral, choral, chamber and solo instrumental works. He is particularly interested in writing for voices and has written numerous songs and several musicals

He and his wife, Claire-Louise Lucas, mezzo-soprano, are great exponents of British repertoire and have toured the States twice lecturing and performing.

They have recorded a CD of songs by Elgar and Vaughan Williams, including Sea Pictures in Elgar's recital version for voice and piano.

He is currently working on an opera based on Euripides’s Hecuba. His works have been performed in Britain, Europe and the USA, where the Boston Globe described him as having “a compositional voice that was unmistakably his own - harmonically daring yet shunning obscurity, ... both civilised and full of sap”.
