Event description

Description

Nature is being affected by climate change as we move into a 1˚C world. As climate change progresses, we need to understand more about future impacts to be able to deliver successful nature conservation, already a vibrant and growing part of ecological research. The Met Office’s latest climate change projections (UKCP18) provide an update to our understanding of the UK’s future climate. They build on the widely-used UKCP09 projections and were released in November 2018. This one-day workshop is an early opportunity to enable researchers to learn about and understand the best way to use the UK’s new projections directly from the people involved in developing them, with hands on exploration. It will foster closer links between ecologists and Met Office scientists, helping further develop research into climate impacts on nature.

The objectives are to

1) Ensure the best, most relevant UK climate change data is used in ecological research

2) Increase familiarity and early uptake of the Met Office’s UKCP18 climate change projections as a means to develop ecological climate change research

3) Facilitate working between the Met Office and natural environment users of climate change data and information

A detailed agenda will be released soon, but broadly the day will follow two parts;

1) an overview of the UKCP18 projections by the Met Office

2) hands-on use and exploration of the UKCP18 projections and insight into the practicalities and potential of using them in ecological research (participative session)

There will also be an opportunity for a tour of the Met Office before the workshop begins

Intended Audience

This workshop is relevant to researchers in many areas of climate change ecology, including those determining the impacts of climate change on coastal change, biodiversity and ecosystems, and those developing adaptation to climate change, including nature-based solutions. The workshop will also be relevant to those who develop and influence climate change policy, communicate how the UK’s climate is expected to change and the resulting impact on nature and ecosystems.
