Event description

Description

Partnering with Bristol Old Vic Theatre, Hauser & Wirth Somerset is delighted to host the hugely successful Bristol Old Vic Youth Theatre Summer School again this August.

This is an incredible opportunity for young people interested in drama and performing arts to work with professional directors to create an original piece of theatre.

In collaboration with the team from Bristol Old Vic Theatre, this year’s course participants will be asked to devise a new play told through movement, music and theatre, which will take Alexander Calder’s exhibition, ‘From the Stony River to the Sky’ as their starting point.

The school culminates in a one-off public performance on Thursday 23 August 2018, set within the grounds of Hauser & Wirth Somerset.

The workshop will run on weekdays from the 13 – 23 August 2018, 10 am – 5 pm daily and is available to young people aged 11 – 16 years. This is a subsidised event and tickets are £150 for the full course.

We ask that all children are delivered to the gallery and picked up by a responsible adult, please let us know if you wish your child to travel to and from the gallery on their own. Children should bring a packed lunch, snacks and drinks as necessary.

Director: James Kent

James is a London-based director, theatre practitioner and film maker. His work features a heavy visual and audio aesthetic to drive evocative narratives – most recently working as a resident artist at the Tobacco Factory in Bristol to create a dual-screen film installation charting modern relationships through movement and sound. As a practitioner, James is currently working with the Lyric Hammersmith on their intervention project, REWIND, which aims to support young people aged 11 – 16 who are identified as ‘at-risk’ of expulsion from education. Prior to this, James spent 8 years as a director and practitioner with the Bristol Old Vic Young Company Engagement department working with the Young Company and local schools and communities, delivering workshops and directing productions. As an artist James has made work with Bristol Old Vic, Tobacco Factory, Young Vic, National Theatre, Headlong, Lyric Hammersmith, Actors Touring Company, Wardrobe Ensemble, Wardrobe Theatre, Fen, Tremolo Theatre, Sharp Teeth, Insane Root, and Theatre Orchard.

Assistant Director: Jack Orozco Morrison
