Description

Arts Council England 70th Anniversary Concert
Bristol800 Weekender
Fri 11 November 2016
19:00-20:30
Arnolfini

Free admission, but booking required

To mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of Arts Council England (ACE) we present a lecture by Sir Christopher Frayling, former ACE chair, and the performance of a specially commissioned piece of music.

Frayling will look at the history of Arts Council England; reflect on his time as ACE chair; and provide some thoughts on the future of arts funding and arts policy.

‘Dance where the Spirit Enlightens’ was composed by Liz Lane. Bhangra Music: RSVP Bhangra (pictured above). Words: Andy Rashleigh Conductor: Ian Holmes

The piece brings together a diverse group of seventeen musicians of different cultures and musical backgrounds, ranging from top professionals to young students, in a celebration of art and culture through seven decades.

Seven movements portray aspects of the Arts Council’s history whilst also representing key elements of Arts Council England’s support for the arts today: collections; combined arts; dance; libraries; literature; museums; music; theatre and visual arts.

The title is inspired by quotes from the first chairman of the Arts Council, John Maynard Keynes, and the current chairman, Sir Peter Bazalgette, found on this website.

Prior to the performance, Liz Lane will talk about how the commission was developed.

Musicians: Belinda Evans – Soprano; Andrew Loveridge – Saxophones; David Thornton – Euphonium; Ruth Watson – Oboe and Cor Anglais; Steph West – Harp; Alice Cleaver – Cello

Members of Lydbrook Brass Band (pictured above): Glen Carroll – Soprano Cornet; Phil Storer – Cornet; Robert Morgan – Cornet; Jack Lythaby – Tenor Horn; Paula Taylor – Baritone; Nigel Howard – Trombone; Trevor Moss – Eb Bass

This event is part of the Bristol800 Universities Showcase Weekender, in association with Bristol Festival of Ideas.

Bristol800 is supported by:

Arts Council England, Bristol & Bath Cultural Destinations, Bristol City Council, The Society of Merchant Venturers, University of Bristol, University of the West of England

We have restricted the number of tickets that can be booked to one per transaction. This has been introduced in an effort to stop people automatically booking multiple tickets without confirming if they have guests to go with them. We hope this will help to limit the number of 'no shows' at the events, which currently run at around 35% of bookings. We will monitor the situation. If you need more than one ticket, you can click on the booking link again. The little extra effort involved will hopefully put off those who don’t really need more than one, but not those who do.

If you like what Bristol Festival of Ideas does, and want to help us continue to keep our prices low and offer a wide range of free events, then please consider making a donation. Your donation will be made to Bristol Cultural Development Partnership, which manages the Festival, but all donations go to the Festival. Please note that one donation equates to one ticket.

Please ensure you use the correct email address. This is where your ticket will be sent. If you do not provide the correct address, you will not receive the acknowledgement email or ticket.

We share audience data with our funding partners. Please contact us if you would not like your data shared.
