Afrikan Heritage* communities (AHC) of Bristol are invite to make your contribution to a national and local call for dialogue on reparations
About this event
The Mayor of Bristol in conjunction with Afrikan Connexions Consortium, African Voices Forum and the Stop the Maangamizi are inviting you to a community led meeting on Thursday 14th January at 7.30pm in partnership with Bristol City Council where we will explore the following:
- What is the meaning of Reparations?
- Why is reparations as much about the present and future as it is about the past?
- What are the national and wider initiatives involved in the campaign for Reparations?
- What do Bristol Afrikan Heritage Communities want to see included in a reparations policy platform?
- Why is there a specific UK and international demand for an All Party Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry for Truth and Reparatory justice?
- How do you ensure reparations is properly understood so that it is a cause for repair rather than an opportunity for opponents to divide?
- What is the relationship between reparations and the immediate drivers of racial, political, economic and social inequality.
You may be aware that a 'Reparations and Atonement' motion is in the process of being debated by a growing number of local authorities around the country over recent months. Bristol will soon be discussing this motion at a full council meeting but we need to hear from you first!
We need the debate to be shaped by the whole community - both in terms of the concept itself, the work done to ready the city for a discussion and ensuring there is shared understanding. Acknowledging that many of us are on a journey.
At this community meeting you will hear about the context that has led to this point in the reparations conversation. You can also find out about main proposals within the motion and be invited to comment on them. Contributors to the dialogue will also come from Afrikan Heritage representatives of the bodies working together to facilitate this meeting namely:
- The Afrikan Connexions Consortium
- African Voices Forum
- Bristol City Council
- The Stop the Maangamizi! We Charge Genocide/Ecocide Campaign
*Afrikan Heritage Communities are a diverse group who may also identify or describe themselves as:
African, Caribbean, African-Caribbean, Nigerian, Jamaican, Ghanaian, Trinidadian, Black British, or of a dual heritage including African etc.
Please note that this is a meeting open ONLY to the communities of interest as expressed above.
